I have had my fair share of false starts... failings... and calls for project re-invention. Hell, as a makeup artist I feel like I am constantly re-inventing myself as an artist; a new portfolio, new location, new logo, new clients.
I started the GBP in 2010 as an experiment. This experiment was a project I wished existed when I was in the first few years of my career... so I decided to build it myself. Over the years it's caused me many sleepless nights, many hours at the computer and I am sure I would look a couple of years younger had I not experienced the rough ride so far. In the beginning, I was twice able to link senior artists with emerging artists around Australia and provide them with my 8 week curriculum to guide their mentorships. No one ever earnt any money from this, I spent countless hours writing, emailing and coordinating for the project. There were successes and many failures. The successes that I know about I treasure as I know that wouldn't have happened had I not put in the effort from my end. Never had the saying "If not me, who? If not now, when?" rung so true.
When I was due to launch a third mentorship, disaster happened. It was quite like a snowball of disaster really.
Failures included reports of Mentorships that were not completed... maybe only a couple of sessions happening. Even a mentor once being paired with a worthy emerging artist, receiving the curriculum and then writing to me to say 'it wasn't for them... they could do better themselves' and going ahead with their own 'inspirational' workshop and most heartbreaking of all... getting the emerging artist to handle all their bookings. Safe to say I was mortified.
When I launched my original GBP website... I was hacked by 'talents' in Russia and South Korea who thought it would be fun just to link my website back to their own domain.
When I finally got all the bugs fixed... I celebrated with a glass of wine... sat back down at the computer and some of that wine dripped on my keyboard and fried my computer.
I eventually had my computer repaired and a few months later... was involved in an accident that had a car reverse over that computer and I lost my curriculum, email list, competition winners... the lot. No backup. Don't ask.
I eventually had to concentrate on getting my own career happening again in Sydney after moving from interstate... so the G.B.P. went on hold.
That was then... this is now. VIVA LA RESILIENCE!
Earlier this year my producer, Michelle Dube approached me asking me to start a Portfolio Workshop... little did she know I was already working on restructuring the GBP. Even after all the disasters... the idea and integrity of the project still kept me up at night. There was still that inner drive that existed for what the GBP stood for. The same drive that has me be Creative Director for the Face2Face Awards and involve myself in other projects that have a similar goal - To create a space for emerging makeup artists to nurture their own careers with valuable tools.
Here we are! Back at the beginning. I can only put the past failings and disasters behind me, remember the lessons they taught me and move forward. If I dwell on it all... I may go crazy.
The CLASS SERIES will eventually look like the original mentorship... only now you can choose which order you do the classes... its open to everyone... and will eventually run in as many states as there are willing artists to participate. In other words... you can build your own mentorship over time and the class series will open the benefits up to more artists... not just a handful each year.
I am creating a SCHOLARSHIP FUND that will eventually get put towards creating even more amazing events/opportunities for Australian MUAs... including an award... which will be super fun. Every CLASS SERIES that you attend... 10% will go into this fund as well as 10% from my upcoming book 'MUA Bootcamp'.
Part of the scholarship feature is creating a place in as many courses as we can for Australian MUAs... and we start with CLASS SERIES. We believe the scholarship programme will open doors to those artists who have talent, integrity and passion but may not have the funds to build their careers. If you want to apply for a scholarship APPLY HERE. We want to begin the programme with the Class Series - PORTFOLIO WORKSHOP.
The future holds many exciting features... but one step at a time.
Remember that this is an industry project.. and we want to hear from you! If you want to write for our news page... let us know! If you have a class you would like to see a scholarship created for... let us know! If you have a product or service you think benefits Makeup Artists... tell us all about it. Let's get the party started x
